Today I designed my first News-Times front page. It was straightforward and simple – both the design and the process.

Here’s a page design I did for an article about travel vaccinations. I created little tab-like graphics for the sidebar and a compass rose to match the color scheme. Not terribly exciting. Click the image for a PDF version of the page.
Here’s a design I did tonight for a feature about elderly people who decide to stay at home. This section offered me a bit more freedom, so I used different fonts and some custom elements. The “H” incorporates a simple negative space illustration of a house and the informational box was custom-designed to allow more breathing room and use the extra space outside the body text. I also eliminated the paragraph breaks from the first block of text, replacing them with a paragraph glyph. The ornaments around the byline were taken from BittBox’s lovely free hand-drawn collection.
I should also note that the mis-matched blue color in the masthead doesn’t show up in print. I don’t know why it’s there in the first place, but I didn’t design the template, so who knows.

As I mentioned earlier, we went to a Mets game tonight to celebrate Julia’s dad’s birthday. Despite some drama, it was a great night. When we first arrived, we realized that we had managed to buy the worst seats possible – a low-hanging beam obstructed most of the field and everything above the infield. After talking with the ticket office, we managed to get new tickets for Julia’s parents in a much nicer location.
Less than halfway through the first inning, two men sitting in front of us were ejected for being volatile and throwing food, which spurred cheers from our entire section.
While I spent a few minutes wandering the stadium taking photos, I ran into a guy named Mike Keaveny who was trying to get a wave going (only once did it even get past halfway around the stadium). Nevertheless, I spent a few minutes talking to and taking photos of him from his outpost in the farthest reaches of the upper deck above right field.
Unfortunately, Julia’s dad’s name was not displayed on the scoreboard as we had hoped. The team honors the first 25 requests for each game. The submission process requires a physical letter of request and offers no confirmation of any kind, which is annoying. Still, it was a great night and hopefully a great birthday!

Although it’s after midnight and therefore no longer June 1st, I want to wish my dad a very very happy birthday!!! We started the day having a delicious brunch, followed by a relaxing tea on the deck, and concluded the day attending the Mets home game hosting the Dodgers which the Mets ACTUALLY won! The weather was beautiful and the whole day couldn’t have been better. I really hope he enjoyed it as much as I did.
Here’s to you dad! I hope you had a truly enjoyable birthday with many, many more to come. I love you.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK!
Today is Julia’s dad’s birthday, so to celebrate we went with Julia’s parents, sister and her boyfriend, Morgan, to a great brunch buffet at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich. We had pancakes with everything from chocolate chips to raspberries, omelets, pasta and a chocolate fountain. The food was great and afterward we gave Julia’s dad his gifts, including tickets to a Mets game tonight.
When we got back to the house, Julia noticed something in the river adjacent to the property. Sure enough, there was a young snapping turtle lounging around in the water. Being the reptile geek that I am, I had to pay it a visit.

Realizing that we’re going to the game.

Not happy. (I didn’t put a border or a watermark on this image since Julia took it.)
Here’s a page I designed tonight for one of the black and white inside pages. It’s the type of thing that generally has a rigid style. I wanted to present four stories about the presidential candidates without crowding the page. Here’s what I came up with. Click on the image for a PDF version of the page.
