April 23 & 24 – Recap

Just a quick update for those of you on the edge of your seats when it comes to our lives.

  • I re-chipped the tooth that was repaired on Monday.
  • I sent my favorite lens – a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM – in for repairs. The front piece of the lens body was coming loose. With just under a month left on the three-year extended warranty, the timing was pretty much perfect!
  • I stepped on a hot coal from the grill. The coal became embedded, resulting in what appears to be a black crater in the ball of my foot.
  • I discovered a deep laceration in Data’s left rear leg that has become infected, so he is now on antibiotics (again) and will need hot compresses twice a day.

In other news, Julia completed all of her classwork for a S.C.U.B.A. certification. She has promised that she will post about it, but has not done so yet. Also, I’m working on a really big photography-related post, but it will take me quite a while to finish.

    Bike Ride

Today I went for a bike ride and took a few photos.  Click “there’s more to…” to see them all.  Bonus photo of my chipped tooth before I had it fixed earlier today.

    A Pasta Affair

Tonight Julia and I went to Pasta Fair with Julia’s neighbor, Jenn, and her two kids, Dylan and Morgan.  The food was good and the kids behaved themselves and kept the volume at a reasonable level.  Here are some photos of the kids goofing off.  Click “there’s more to…” to see them all.

Tally Hall & The Republic Tigers

We picked up Sam from Toad’s Place, where he had just finished his sound check with Tally Hall, at 5:30 p.m. and made our way to Modern Apizza.

There was, as always, a wait, but we were seated relatively quickly and our waiter was attentive. We ordered bruschetta and two large pizzas. One plain cheese and one with cherry peppers. We fully understood that we would have extra pizza, but we wanted Sam to have some leftovers to bring back with him so the band would know what they were missing. Our food arrived quickly and we were able to stuff ourselves completely with time to spare before Sam had to be back at the venue to prepare for the show.

We found a parking spot directly in front of Toad’s Place and were able to catch the last two songs of The Republic Tigers’ set. This was ideal for me as it gave me a chance to get an idea for the type of lighting in the venue, which was quite nice. There was a good variety of lights on all sides of the stage, with gels of different colors and a few moving spotlights that provided nice angular lighting. I didn’t get a chance to get much of an impression of The Republic Tigers’ music, but what I heard was good.

After a quick set change, Tally Hall took the stage. First, a projector played a video that exhibited some of the other content that can be found on their website. When the group came out, found a few different spots from which to photograph and began snapping away. Their music clearly has a variety of influences and the band members themselves have a lot of fun being on stage. They don’t take themselves too seriously, which makes it much more entertaining when they break into spontaneous bouts of old-school hip hop (Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend”, specifically). They closed their set in a particularly nice and unique way, which was to descend from the stage and have the entire audience sit around them in a circle while they played a few acoustic songs.

We had a great night, both because it was good to see Sam again and because we had a lot of fun at the show. Hopefully he and Tally Hall will roll through the area again one of these days.

Here are tonight’s photos. Click “there’s more to…” to see them all or visit my SmugMug.

    On A Bowl

Tonight, Julia and I joined her neighbors Jenn and Bob for dinner and bowling.  We went to Pasta Fair in Norwalk, which is just a few minutes from Julia’s house and right across the street from the bowling alley.  The food was great, which means Jenn and Bob will now have another place they can bring their kids in the future.

Bob spanked us all at bowling, although he needed to (and did) roll three strikes in a row to beat Julia at the end of the last round, but we all had a great time.  We capped off the night with a round of Julia’s favorite game, Photo Hunt.  Since it’s late and Julia has already fallen asleep, I won’t say too much, but I do have a pair of photos to post.

Tomorrow, we are going to meet with Sam in New Haven.  He, along with his roommate, Will, and dog, Billy, put us up at their apartment in Portland for a few days during the road trip.  Now, Sam is in town touring with the band Tally Hall as their sound manager.  We are going to meet him at Modern Apizza for some great pizza before heading to Toad’s Place for the concert, for which Sam was able to get us tickets.  Hopefully we’ll have plenty of photos tomorrow night!

    Waveny

Since the weather was incredibly nice today, I brought Data, Lucy, and Bella (Julia’s neighbor’s dog) to nearby Waveny Dog Park. Of course, I took photos. Click “there’s more to…” to see them all.

Never Do What I Just Did

It seemed like a good idea. I haven’t slept much, so I drew up a hot bath and, while waiting for the tub to fill, made myself two egg sandwiches. I don’t often take baths, but when I do, I like them hot.

My egg sandwiches were delicious and afterward I got in the tub. Immediately I began to feel sleepy. Before I knew it, I was nodding off. Shortly thereafter, I awoke with sweat pouring off my face and nausea setting in. I could barely move, but I needed to cool off ASAP. I drained the bath and spent the next 30 minutes trying to regulate my breathing while fighting off the urge to vomit. As I cooled off, I felt better and more comfortable, which led me to fall asleep again. Another hour or so later, I finally woke up, cold, in an empty tub, but feeling better. At this point, some lung cancer organization called asking for money.

Needless to say, it’s been a rough day so far.

    Fresh Chicks

Today my mom received her annual shipment of baby chicks. Of course, photos had to be taken.

In fact, there is some video Julia took, but I’ve had a hell of a time getting SmugMug’s new video feature to work the way I wanted it to, so I am not able to post the video.  You can click here to see the videos – they are the three thumbnails with play symbols on them.  Be warned: you may be asked to download QuickTime, a program I do not endorse.  Firefox users have had problems getting the videos to play properly even with the program as well.  Click “there’s more to…” to see the rest of the photos.

    Running On Empty

Gas is far cheaper in Massachusetts than it is in Connecticut, so when Julia was running low on gas last night, she wanted to wait until we could cross the border to fill up.  We barely made it home last night and there was some doubt as to whether or not we would make it to the gas station, which is just a few miles away.  We took separate cars and a gas canister, just in case.  Luckily, we made it to the gas station without issue.

    Empty

Notice the gas gauge and the display that reads “Range — miles”.
